Since 1979, the First Amendment Awards has honored more than 150 individuals. At our annual First Amendment Awards event, the Foundation is pleased to honor one individual with our Lifetime Achievement award. The recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement award is Floyd Abrams, a well respected First Amendment lawyer who is being honored for his lifelong devotion to Constitutional law.

Floyd has argued numerous significant First Amendment cases in the U.S. Supreme Court. Many arguments he has made orally and in his briefs to the Court have been adopted by it as binding precedent protecting freedom of speech and the press from infringement by the government. Floyd has represented many news outlets and publications in trials, appeals and investigations, including the New York Times in the Pentagon Papers case. Floyd represented the Brooklyn Art Museum when its funding was cut after the museum refused to remove artwork that the Mayor viewed as offensive.

Floyd has spent his career defending American’s right to free speech, press and expression; he is one of America’s unsung heroes and we’re proud to recognize him with the Lifetime Achievement award.
